"Guitar Hero" surgiu em 2005 e, com o enorme sucesso que fez, virou sinônimo de jogo musical. A partir de então, de olho no enorme potencial de renda, a franquia ganhou um episódio canônico todos os anos, além de inúmeros "spin-offs". Com a inovação proposta pelo rival "Rock Band" - que trazia também microfone e controles em forma de bateria, além da guitarra -, em 2007, "Guitar Hero" precisou também se adaptar, usando as mesmas armas.
Se houve um salto na linha de evolução da série entre "Guitar Hero III" e "World Tour", pressionado por "Rock Band", as mudanças em "Guitar Hero 5" são menos dramáticas, mas prometem tornar sua função de entretenimento social - afinal, é considerado um ótimo game para se jogar em reuniões de amigos - bem mais livre. Para isso, criou uma modalidade específica, chamada Party Play.
Nessa opção, o game aceita qualquer combinação de instrumentos. Ou seja, a banda não precisa ser formada por um vocalista, guitarrista, baixista e baterista. Qualquer combinação é válida: duas guitarras e duas baterias, ou três guitarras e um microfone, por exemplo. Além disso, é possível trocar de instrumento no ato, e entrar e sair da partida a qualquer momento, sem precisar de preocupar em falhar.
Já o RockFest é um novo modo multiplayer, que tem foco na diversão. Até oito jogadores podem competir em diversas regras. Em Momentum, por exemplo, o nível de dificuldade varia conforme o desempenho (vai ficando mais difícil na medida em que vai acertando as notas), e quanto mais alta a dificuldade, maior a pontuação. Já em Streakers, os jogadores ganham pontos apenas se acertar dez notas ou mais.
O game promete 85 artistas - sendo que 30 são estreantes na série - na trilha sonora, incluindo Beastie Boys, Rush, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Nirvana, Public Enemy (com Zakk Wylde) e Megadeth. Algumas das canções confirmadas são "Sympathy for the Devil" (Rolling Stones), "Under Pressure" (Queen e David Bowie), "All Along The Watchtower" (Bob Dylan), "Brianstorm" (Arctic Monkey) e "Blue Orchid" (White Stripes).
